Now wasn’t that a surprise, when Prime Minister Theresa May announced a snap election set for 8 June 2017. I was literally said “woooah – hold up we just had one!’
After watching her announcement at Number 10 Downing Street I picked up on three things. Number one – seems like a democratic thing to do with all the opposition to government, allowing other political parties to reinforce their manifestos. Number two- the results of this election can either calm us all down or cause more division in Britain. Number three- this woman is ready for war.
Now, for those who don’t have a clue what’s going on in British politics – let’s just say it had been pretty chaotic. We’re in the process of Brexit and according to Mrs May division in Westminster (british politics) will risk the ability to make a success of brevet and will cause instability. It’s a chance for the government and the opposition to present their alternative plans for Brexit.
This is why she introduced the election, so that everyone has a say we’ll have an idea of what everyone is thinking and saying. This is an chance for us to see if people’s minds have changed since General Election 2015 and the 2016 Referendum. Fact is people’s minds have changed, for instance, some of those who voted to leave the EU wanted to leave the EU but not the single market. Surprise – the PM stated we are indeed leaving the single market.
Despite Labour losing bitterly in 2015, leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn said eh’s ready to “put the case out there.” In response to the announcement of the snap election he emphasised that it’s a chance to stand up against the government and its failed economic agenda which has left the NHS in problems and schools under funded. He also highlighted the need for a fairer society.
First minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon believes that the PM is somewhat sly for this proposition, saying that it’s a chance to crush the opposition since Labour are at odds within their own party and lost the previous election.
Funny she said that, I was listening to Radio 4 and people kept calling saying that they would usually vote Labour but they were going to vote Tory as a tactical way of making sure brexit happens. Those on the other end of the spectrum said they’ll vote Liberal Democrats because they simply don’t like Corbyn.
Despite the PM stating that she was reluctant to have this election, I think she’s loving this idea and rolling all in it like a pig in mud. Simply because she knows she has the support of the majority of the country, it’s no longer party based, it’s brexit based. This is also a chance for the opposition to put their best foot forward. The way British politics is going at the moment, don’t be surprised if the Liberal Democrats win the majority (I’m kidding!) but we’ve definitely had our fair share of surprises not just in Great Britain but globally. We’ll have to wait and see!
